The hotel del Coronado is one of the oldest and largest all-wooden buildings in California. It was built in 1888 and was the largest resort hotel in the world. It also was the first hotel to use electrical lighting. A cage elevator in the lobby hand-operated by an attendant is still there – as a throwback to the past.
The Travel Channel named the Hotel the #1 destination for weddings in the United States.
Marilyn was 32 when the movie was made. She played the part of Sugar Kane, a 25-year-old girl. While she won a Golden Globe for her role, the actress reportedly remained disappointed in her performance. During the movie shooting Tony Curtis reproached Marilyn in gaining too much weight. According to a hotel chef, Marilyn craved the cold soufflé vanilla pudding with egg-white decoration. She requested it each day.
On Saturday, September 6, 1958, Marilyn Monroe and the 175-person company of “Some Like it Hot” arrived at the Hotel del Coronado to begin location shots. Besides Marilyn Monroe, the movie director Billy Wilder invited Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon to play the main characters.
